See's Candies

If you live in the West, you know all about See’s Candies. For those of us not lucky enough to have one with walking distance, let’s review:

Founded in 1921, this established candy-maker is best known for its gourmet lollipops (which would be an amazing Valentine’s Day gift in and of themselves).

The first thing that should stick out with See’s is the price – an adorably cheeky heart box filled with gourmet chocolates for under $20? A peanut butter heart roughly the size of a teacup saucer for less than $5? Are you joking?

The Sweetheart Box of chocolates is wrapped in a delightful packaging, and the treats are yummy and exactly what you’d expect – no weird flavor combos or centers-of-unknown-origin here. And, there is a simple beauty in that.

If your love favors dark chocolate, go directly for the foil hearts bag. The individually wrapped hearts figure out to 60 calories each, and the dark chocolate is as good for you as it is superbly crafted.

On the peanut butter cup, though, we were split. One of us thought it was ‘too floury,’ while another thought the flavor was dense and perfectly balanced. Another was so intimidated by the size and the sheer thought of that much knee-weakening deliciousness, she couldn’t bring herself to try it for fear she’d eat the whole thing. So, not much help from us there.

What Us Girls Thought

  • Amber says: ‘Thank you, See’s, for reminding me why it’s sometimes better not to be surprised.’
  • Jacqui says: ‘Maybe I am spoiled by all of the chocolate I consumed, but the peanut butter did not impress me. There was nothing wrong with it, just a little bland for my taste.’
  • Kate says: ‘I didn’t try See's because I was afraid I’d eat the whole thing – it all looked so good.’
